That being said, RetroArch is not perfect. RetroArch has been around since 2004 and its development team is very active. RetroArch has the ability to save your game with SRAM (in-game) saves like how it was on the original console, and you can also use save states to take a snapshot of any game at any time as well. RetroArch uses “Playlists” to organize the game library, and it will allow you to add box art (“Thumbnails”) to every game as you scroll through, and you can also set favorites, which is very handy. Adding filters to your game image will smooth out pixel distortion for screens that don’t accurately match the original console you are emulating. Filters behave like shaders for your games, and can alter the screen to provide you a better visual experience. Shaders apply an overlay to your screen that can mimic scanlines, colorization, or other effects that will recreate CRT monitors, chunky LCD grid displays, and more. If you have certain preferences for your scaling (perfect pixel accuracy, or stretching out the image to take up the full screen), RA should have what you need. ![]() With RetroArch, you can adjust the game image to match your device’s dimensions and resolution, or even apply bezel overlays to customize the layout of your screen. You can find RetroArch on many systems, and it can also emulate a ton of systems too. For example, with RetroArch, you can unlock the following features: RetroArch features (click to enlarge) The answer is that RetroArch contains a lot of universal features that are not implemented in many of the other emulators. So you might be asking yourself, why should I bother with RetroArch, if I already have standalone emulator options that will play my games? That’s a fair question. Depending on the version of RetroArch you are using, you can pick and choose which cores to load, to be able to customize your experience, or the RetroArch build may come pre-loaded with all working cores. So in this guide I will use the words “emulators” and “cores” interchangeably. RetroArch consists of what they call “ cores“, which function as emulators embedded in the program. I have a habit of pronouncing it the latter way, which is what you’ll hear in my videos. Note that technically, “RetroArch” should be pronounced like “RetroARTCH” versus “RetroARK”, because it was first based on Arch Linux, but both pronunciations are considered acceptable. The frontend for RetroArch is often referred to as the “libretro frontend”. It can run on the usual platforms like Windows, MacOS and Linux, but it also runs on iOS and Android for tablets and phones, as well as on game consoles like PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, Wii, Wii U, 2DS, 3DS, Switch, and more. RetroArch is a frontend for emulators, game engines and media players. ![]() However, if you are using a system that relies primarily on RetroArch for emulation (like Xbox), or you have a beefy PC that can run well regardless of optimizations, you may find success in emulating higher-end systems in RetroArch, too. For more modern consoles, it is often more efficient to rely on standalone emulators, which are generally more optimized than RetroArch. RetroArch really shines on retro systems, particularly PlayStation 1 and below games. The video will primarily be done on Windows PC, but the same method will apply to MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Vita, and Xbox platforms, and more. This guide is meant to help you get set up with various RetroArch iterations. In this guide I’m going to demystify some of the more peculiar things about this emulation frontend, and show you how I set up RetroArch on my own gaming platforms. But it does have quite a steep learning curve. RetroArch is one of my favorite programs to use for retro game emulation, because it can emulate many systems. One thing you should remember is that the 3rd interval dictates whether a chord is major or minor. A chord formed from these 3 notes is called a triad. Therefore, an E major chord is formed by the combination of notes E, G#, and B. Major chords are comprised of 3 notes, the 1st, 3rd, and 5th intervals of the Major scale. Brief Music TheoryĬhords are formed from the major scale, which is comprised of 7 interval notes. Fretting the chord and having your fingers in the right place is not enough if you arent able to strum out the chord properly. Remember to always practice both hands in every aspect. Strumming too hard can result in the guitar buzzing against other frets as well as unwanted harmonics that take away from the tone of your playing. Instead, focus on comfortably fretting the notes and getting into a comfortable rhythm with your strumming that allows each note to sound out when played. A slight touch is enough to mute any string. In this case, the B string gets blocked by the index finger. The B string is not ringing – This usually happens when the string is blocked by another finger. As suggested above try to fret closer to the frets. Two of the most common challenges for guitarists on the E major chord are the following:īuzzing Frets – The most common issue here is not putting your finger close enough to the frets and rarely is not pressing hard enough. But like everything on guitar, it’s very easy to sound bad and to learn bad habits. Luckily the E guitar chord is not hard to play in comparison to other open shapes. Fretting too hard will change the pitch of the string, begin to wear out your strings and frets, as well as tire your hand and fingers faster.Ĭheck out this video for a more detailed explanation of the chord fingering: The low E is the most important open string to hit as it is the bass root note.įocus on placing your fingers as close to the frets as possible, without touching them.Īlso don’t press too hard, you should press just hard enough to make the string ring. Net Framework and the familiarity of most people to the Windows operating system makes IIS a very compelling web server choice. I agree with Zac and Mary about “good 4 u” being a lazy (and inaccurate) comparison to Paramore, and really the closest it gets to that same wavelength is on its brash, punk rock chorus. The duo of “deja vu” and “happier” initially reminded me of Billie Eilish with whispery vocals and similar production elements to bring out the best product in the end. Similar to how Mary described the comparison to Lorde on this single, I can also hear that, with a subtle mix of Lana Del Rey. Other early album standouts like “traitor” are reminiscent of Julien Baker, whereas the mega-hit “drivers license” unfolds with the majestic beauty of Maggie Rogers’ trademark brand of pop. The near-album closer “jealousy, jealousy” is also in that same wheelhouse of K. ![]() Flay’s latest efforts, with more of the guitar bite of Beach Bunny. The crunchy guitar riffs of the opener “brutal” reminded me of the stylistic choices found on K. Contrary to popular sentiment, SOUR sounds nothing like Paramore.Īdam Grundy (AG) : Starting from my first listen of SOUR I noticed a few subtle comparisons of both artists past and present, all well-packaged together into a fresh and modern sound. Zac Djamoos (ZD) : Olivia Rodrigo’s voice invites comparisons to Lorde, as does the album’s darker, slower style. I don’t think that Olivia is the next anyone, she is her own artist carving her own path. Of course, she samples Taylor Swift’s “New Year’s Day” on “1 step forward, 3 steps back,” so the Taylor influence is there, too. The relatable ruminations about heartbreak (“traitor,” “driver’s license,” “enough for you”) are reminiscent of Lorde’s storytelling on Melodrama. With “brutal,” I hear the teenage fierceness and humor that dominated Wolf Alice’s debut album, My Love is Cool. I hear more Breakaway-era Kelly Clarkson in “good 4 u” than anything else. Paramore are incredible and one of my favorite bands, but those constant, unfounded comparisons that pinned women against each other simply for sounding alike or being influenced by Hayley is something I never want to see again. That was lazy, outdated, misogynistic bullshit that erased the hard work bands like VersaEmerge, We Are the in Crowd, or Against the Current were putting in. I don’t hear shared melodies, and lyrically, they are pretty far apart – “Misery Business” is scathing in its ingrained misogyny while “good 4 u” is biting and sarcastic without insulting “the other woman.” However, I’m not upset about the comparison – people actually hear a likeness rather than bringing back the sexist trope that any band with a non-male singer is the “next Paramore” without anything in common with Paramore’s musical styles or Hayley Williams’ vocal and lyrical flairs. ![]() Mary Varvaris (MV): The persistent narrative around “good 4 u” is that it mirrors “Misery Business” by Paramore. What qualities of Olivia Rodrigo draw comparisons to other artists? What songs in particular do you see these comparisons on SOUR? Our next group topic takes a look at Olivia Rodrigo’s ultra-popular SOUR album. So I'm using Wireguard to tunnel between the Linux VM and the Mac, so that the container IPs end up visible on the Mac. The container's IP is not visible to the Mac, just to the Linux VM. Bridged networking there just bridges the containers to the Linux VM. ĭocker Mac runs a Linux VM and then runs your containers on that Linux VM. To access something on I'd then just use. I'd simply use bridged networking in the container which would give the container an IP that works for things running on the Linux host. ![]() If I were running Docker on Linux this would not be a problem. If Docker Mac works as well on Apple Silicon I might be able to just stick with that and not need either VMWare or Parallels. Specifically, Wireguard between the Linux VM that Docker Mac creates to run containers and the Mac. That turned out to be not too difficult to deal with by using Wireguard. E.g., if I've got a server that would be foo.com when live on a real server that I'm testing locally in a container, I want it to appear at some_ip:443 on my Mac, not on something like localhost:8443 that Docker maps to port 443 in the container. The only real snag was that I want services running in a Docker container to be reachable from Mac processes on the same port they would be on when deployed on a real server somewhere. I recently have switched to using Docker for that. Most of my use of VMWare Fusion on my Intel Mac is to run Linux VMs. That's assuming that I decide that I actually need such a product. I don't like that Parallels requires a subscription to get more than 8 GB of RAM in a virtual machine so I'll be sticking with VMWare Fusion when I get an Apple Silicon Mac. ![]() |
